You can definitely use Hostap in managed mode. It's an excellent client
driver for prism chipsets. 

in your hostap_cs.conf file in /etc/pcmcia you can set iw_mode=2

1 = ad-hoc; 2 = managed; 3 = master;

module "hostap_cs" opts "iw_mode=2 essid=any"

or from the command line:

iwconfig wlan0 mode managed essid www.personaltelco.net
