Ricochet is a modem, whether USB, pcmcia or serial.  I was under the
impression that pppd cannot handle answering the modem (the AT commands
etc.) so I'd need to have mgetty answer it and initiate the ppp session.  

not as easy or fast as wifi but 900Mhz has some advantages for mobility,
getting thru walls trees etc. and decent range.
