Sounds similar to the "microwave compatibility" function some
hardware has...  basically, if you expect semi-regular errors, you
want to limit individual packet lenghtes in-air, to minimize the
data you have to resend if an error occurs.

microwave compat does this by doing link-level fragmentation and reassembly,
I think.
