In that case, even if the off the shelf stuff is deemed unsuitable, I
would think SNMP would be a better choice than SMTP. Client side libraries
are small (although "simple" tends to be overused these days) and freely
available, and any number of existing GUI's and tools could form the basis
for the informational display.
