The OCC does have pretty strict regulations about what types of networking
equiptment exhibitors are allowed to operate. Those can be found here:
http://live.oregoncc.org/ex_services_orders/c&r.htm
Specifically, it says:
"No wireless (WiFi) access points are allowed unless approved by OCC
Telecommunications at (503) 731-7859. SSIDs will not be broadcast. Power
will be set at minimum levels. Any access point(s) that do not meet the
above specifications or that have not been approved by OCC
Telecommunications will be disconnected."
I operated a completely "walled-garden" style of captive portal for the
Posse booth at last year's Innotech. We were paid a friendly visit by the
OCC thugs, and only allowed to continue operation under the assurance that
we were providing NO outside Internet access of any kind.
Knowing the zeal with which the OCC looks to preserve their "captive"
audience, and the fact that the PTP's reputation (and invitation) are at
stake in how we represent ourselves at these such conferences, I would
vote against bringing any sort of repeater onto the premises sporting the
personaltelco.net SSID. Let the guerilla EVDO backpackers (ev)do their
thing, and let everyone else just be completely dissatisfied with the piss
poor service provided by the OCC and 11wireless. Hopefully, the market
will soon realize there is a trustworthy alternative.
I have no problem with us blasting the OCC with signal from outside the
premises, operating a kool-aid wifi stand in the parking lot across the
street, or even attempting to operate a "walled" information portal
describing the PTP members' opinions and alternatives from our booth.
But, please do not break the rules you already know we are required to
operate under in order to impress not only the conference attendees, but
the promoters as well. Bad press may be good press, but a bad taste might
be left in O'Reilly's mouth if we improperly microwave their "free beer".
