It's open wifi, there shouldn't be any compatibility issues that you commonly see with non-standard WEP or WPA implementations on some chipsets. My best guess is that the interface is setup with a static address (192.168.1.x or something along those lines) or static DNS server which is breaking the nocat auth and thus not allowing any of the other apps to work.
