There are many parts that go into making a well used community networking project like the PTP. The backbone tech is important but so too are the things you can do with the nodes and networks being built. Over the next couple of months I would like to focus a bit on the things that are being done, and could be done, on not just the PTP works but any network from your home lan to the globe spanning intertubes. What type of things am I talking about. For starters lets take a look at gnump3d. http://www.gnu.org/software/gnump3d/ This is an easy to set up server app that allows you to easily offer up music, movies and other media to the users of your net. The name may have mp3 in it but the server covers ogg, avis and a ton more media files. The setup is pretty darn easy, there is one configuration file where you can tell gnump3d where the media files you are offering are, how to show them off, add any security you may want and set some options that would make it easier for the users to get the files in other formats. Gnump3d takes those options and sets up a web based server that lets your users search for, stream and download the things you are offering up. Adding and removing new offerings is as easy and placing them where you told gnump3d to look for things, it does the rest. You can see an example running over at the Urban Grind node; next time you are there point your web browsers to http://10.11.19.250:8888 I just set it up last week so there are just a few files now from a group that meets at the UG, I will be adding some PTP related stuff soon. As with many of the apps and servers we will be looking at gnump3d would be something you would want to advertise on your local net via zeroconf or on the splash page of your captive portal if you are running one. There are a million stories in the interconnected community network, this is just one of them. Lets here what you have running on your networks. -tomhiggins -- The Personal Telco Project - http://www.personaltelco.net/ Donate to PTP: http://www.personaltelco.net/donate Un/Subscribe: http://lists.personaltelco.net/mailman/listinfo/general/ Archives: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.network.wireless.portland.general/ Etiquette: http://www.personaltelco.net/index.cgi/MailingListEtiquette
