I've cobbled together something similar while testing 11a radios and
needing something to radiate *something*.  What the video is showing
is equivalent to about a 5 dBi antenna, which is where the "twice the
range and twice the power" is coming from.  5 dBi is "twice the power"
compared to 2 dBi, as your power doubles for every 3 dB.  However,
your power drops as the square of the distance (2 squared is 4x) or
about 6 dBi for every doubling of distance, so that part is wrong.
Bearing in mind my non-expertness in RF, I'd be suspicious of losses
in that solder joint too, if it isn't done cleanly.
