WRT54GS's firewall & VPN

I've been relying on Linksys WRT54GS routers. Right now I've got the firewall/VPN options turned on. My concern is that I don't have a dedicated firewall/VPN box between the net and my WRT54GS. Should I worry? Isn't the WRT54GS's protection enough?
 
I also heard about people getting into their routers from home tunneling in. Gotchas?
