anti-spam filtering on this list? challenge responses?

Hello,

I just sent a message to the swn-dev list and got the following as a
response from one of the list subscribers (an autoreply on behalf Stephan
Verrips).  What is the general consensus in regards to these kind of
anti-spam autoreply systems (challenge-response)?  I can see them as being
useful for email not originating on a mailing list, but I think they're
quite inappropriate on a list.  (Just imagine what would happen if
everybody on this list required an anti-spam reply to get their message to
go through to each subscriber.)

Basically I ask that Stephan Verrips change his anti-spam autoreply
settings to not require confirmation for emails originating on mailing
lists (or at a minimum, originating on the seattlewireless lists).

P.S. if someone is curious about the criteria used by the University of
Minnesota (UMN) for its custom anti-spam system, check out the email block
reasons listed at https://www.umn.edu/dirtools/etc/blockreasons.html  (the
primary reasons are DNS - Reverse DNS misconfig/mismatch, DSN - Delivery
Status Notification failure, DUL - Dial-up Line or Dynamic IP Address, INS
- Insecure Server, OPT - Opt-in/out, SPM - Known Source of Junk Mail, VIR -
Virus Detected)
The techniques used at the UMN have worked very well and don't require any
challenge-response.  The only changes/additions I'd make to the UMN
implementation are:
-to provide granularity to the users over some of the block reasons (esp
DNS) so they can ignore particular criteria if appropriate
-provide a Turing test/captcha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha)
challenge-response for non-mailing list email that'd otherwise be blocked
but is legit (the captcha would stop most software auto-responders).
-an emailed periodic weekly summary mentioning date, sender, and subject of
blocked messages
