Well, actually it *is* a rather big deal to ask for.

satellite provider, a 64K channel is going to run you about $8/min.
That's prime time, you can get it down to under $2.50/min if you're
willing to wait until way off prime time.

In order to achieve 500Kbps on Inmarsat you need a special
duplexer/combiner that multiplexes the channels, which costs 
many thousands (I recall in excess of $10K).  It's not something
you do for a one-time event, although you might can find a 3-rd
party vendor who leases sat equipment/bandwidth and ask for
a cheritable contribution in kind, maybe in exchange for some
advertising space on the program or elsewhere.

I was putting together a similar project with a goal of getting the 
highest rez and picture size from a live streaming video feed in
the arctic ocean from aboard ship.  The most we could afford was
128K of bandwidth and that was a marginal amount to work with,
not full screen or broadcast quality by any stretch.

You might also find an organization that has multiple channels leased
and is will to give you a time slot.  The channels can be dynamically
reallocated by the ground station in fairly short notice (like 24 hrs),
then reverted back to original channel allocation after the timeslot
is complete.  Generally, this service is included free in your package,
if you've got the hardware already installed.

Or, just hold some sporting event and let ESPN show up and do it
for you...

The annoying part about this is that even though 500kbps uplink is not
that much to ask for, a short term deployment might be.    You may be
better off finding someone willing to donate you the hardware + service
plan usage.
