He most likely means the Sveasoft firmware.  Try this search:

I've used the currently freely available Sveasoft Satori 4.0 firmware with
pretty good results, except under heavy bittorrent traffic where dmesg
starts listing "ip_conntrack: table full, dropping packet."  The free
version of Alchemy 5.0 should be available soon with support for the latest
v2.2 WRT54G boxes (Satori 4.0 does not work on the v2.2 WRT54G boxes).

The HyperWRT firmware also can do the power boost and has none of the
politics that surrounds the Sveasoft firmware:

OpenWRT is another option if you're handy at command line stuff.

Finally, you may get better results if you simply move your access point to
the 1st or 2nd floor so it is more in the center of the area you want
wireless coverage.  Can you run CAT5 ethernet cable to such an area, or use
an ethernet-over-phone/ethernet-over-AC adapter to get ethernet to that
more central location?
