I would not make use of mesh routing or WDS (which you are probably refering to) for your WISP.  This will drastically reduce throughput.
 
If you wish to use 802.11b/g for your access layer, I would suggest placing these access points into various locations, and use dedicated links for distribution between these locations.  These dedicated links could either be microwave p2p or p2p 802.11b radios.
 
Due to the routing complexity involved, you may want to actually use a little unix box (Ie: from Metrix) to handle routing between each of your sites.

Hi everyone,

I'm from Belize, Central America, and am looking at setting up a WISP.  Up
until recently I was thinking I would just use the Locustworld mesh boxes
to set up the system here, but I read up on seattlewireless.net that an
access point can be used to reroute an internet connection to a next access
point.  Can anyone tell me how easy this is or where to read up on
it?   How much configuration is it on each access point, and can it be done
over multiple ap's?
