Hey Jim,

How high are those trees compared to your structure and the other 
structure you are trying to connect? Trees are a fair problem and it 
sounds like you have a lot of trees between you. Any obstruction at 
distance say even 10 feet from your beam path is an obstruction 
potentially. I'd say 2.4/5.8Ghz probably won't do it for your.

Line of site is needed for most wireless. There are 900Mhz systems that 
claim non-line of site. I recommend looking at those as they have 
existed and the prices of the gear can be affordable.
NLOS (non-line of site) is the term you are looking for in any gear. 
WaveRider is one such company that makes gear with NLOS in mind: 
http://www.waverider.com.

Once you research what is out there you might be able to find used gear 
much cheaper via Ebay.
