Why not use 10Base2, assuming you can find the cable, and the old NICs to go with it. The maximum run length for 10Base2 is spec'd at 185 meters, which is 606 feet (thanks Google calculator). Since it's coax, it will be relatively hardy (compared to Cat5) and 600 feet should be enough distance to connect the two houses with a few feet to spare. Since it's Ethernet, it won't require a whole lot to make it go, just the nics, terminators (usually come with the nic) and the cable itself. You could probably pick up all this equipment for a song... actually you'd be pretty likely to find it in the dumpster five years ago, but it's still out there somewhere I'm sure.
