I believe you can use the Linksys WDS with other APs based on the same
chipset...i.e. some of the ASUS or Motorola APs loaded with WDS-enabled
firmware should work. Broadcom did most of the hardware design for the
WRT54G and there are several (internally) similar devices under various
manufacturers. There is a forum on the chupa.nl domain that talks about
some of the customed ASUS firmwares for WL-300 and WL-500 APs, IIRC. Also
a german team (DD-WRT) has recently made a derivative/fork of the Alchemy
firmware that has a nice default information/status page visible before
login. Other firmwares include OpenWRT, EWRT, HyperWRT, and the Wifi-Box
firmware. Not all firmware run on all WRT54G/GS hardware revisions so make
sure you read the docs/forums/comments before attempting to flash your
WRT54G. Most current firmware runs on the WRT54G v2.0, some have problems
with v2.2 hardware. Some older firmware only works on v1.0 and v1.1
hardware. The latest firmware tends to run on all revisions.

The DD-WRT guys have also made a cool tool called RFlow...RFlow Cellector
Tool for win32. It's on their site with screenshots.
