Surly, untalkative loners looking for Wi-Fi need to campout elsewhere: Blogs
are abuzz today with the tail of possible hotspot backlash, as a coffee shop
in Seattle—Victrola Coffee & Art—is turning off its free Wi-Fi network on
the weekends. The connections had gone from drawing in customers to making
them incommunicative as they hunkered over their laptops. Turning off the
Wi-Fi has apparently helped turn on the interaction again, and even better,
weekend sales are up. Outside of some nasty e-mails, the café says most
customers have thanked them. —May 27, 2005
