I have had this happen the first time I sailed Lake Michigan. I ended up making a deep dish attenna reflector. After this, I have yet to have a problem with connection You can learn how to make one from O'Reilly's Wireless Hacks. As for the windows software, I would use airopeek. I don't believe linkferret would do it, but the recent update to linkferret might allow the card to listen in monitor mode *layer 2*.
