help increasing receiving signal in japan

hi all

i'm new to this list and hope that someone here can offer some useful
help with a problem i have here in Japan.

I currently have no home internet and getting it has proved difficult
here. Our line is mixed fiber and copper and as such cannot support
DSL. cable is impossible as the landlord wont allow the required
holes to be drilled and fiber to the home (yes they have it here)
cannot be installed in less than 3 months.

That leaves me with the only viable option of "sharring" a wireless
connection from a neighbor about 100 yards away. The connection works
OK but requires me to set my laptop in a rather precarious position
and then cuts off every 15 minutes or so. The signal is generally
fairly weak -82 now with an SNR mostly in the single digits.

I'm using a gateway laptop with an integrated mini orinoco card with
no visible antenna jack. The access point I'm connecting to is
unavaillable to me for configuration as its just a random neighbor.

What I'd like to do is get the necessary hardware to try and repeat or
bridge the signal to my home network OR alternatively and less
desireably to simpky attatched an extenal network adapter with higher
gain to my laptop.

Czan anyone suggest a setup or piece of hardware that would enable
such a configuration...again bearing in mind that i have no access to
the access point i am connecting to.

Thanks a lot

-Barnaby
