RE: EVDO throughput in Seattle

Sure, but cable access is shared as is DSL.  The number of users and their
activities affect the quality of the connection.  The same is true of
multiple users on WiFi hotspots, etc.  

That being said, there's an effort to beef up the EVDO connections to well
over a megabit (did I read THREE Mbps?) .  I think the carriers are seeing
the profitability in this.  Now the backchannel is currently still 1xRTT and
that is used for the "uplink" connection.  Rarely does that get to 128K.  It
is a valid technology and can offer service where DSL is not an option.  I
haven't tried VOIP over it, so I can't speak as to latency, but the RTT from
ping sessions appears to be higher than I think VOIP would tolerate
(170-300ms).  That could be a QOS limit from Verizon.

Interestingly, I've reached speeds of 750Kbps along the Tacoma waterfront
and up around Everett, but not in the Seattle core area.  The best I've done
near the airport is 650Kbps.  Now I have reached 119Mbps (yes,
megabits-per-second) with EVDO... oh, I was using their accelerator
(Venturi). Sorry.  :)
