There was a way to upgrade old Orinoco Silver cards to Gold (which had 128
bit wep support)

There were several ways to get it done, although it may be a bit of a
challenge to track down the hardware or firmware files to do it.  I'm sure
they're still floating around someone's hard drive out there.
