Hi all:

I'm working on a mesh network project in Eastern WA, and had some
questions regarding the routing system you use. As best as I can
gather, a mesh network loosely managed such as yours (loosely == no
one person running all nodes on the network) would need a mesh routing
system, and more importantly for Internet-connected meshes such as
SWN, ways to route to Internet tunnels.

So, I was wondering how does one set up:

1) a member mesh node that does NOT have its own local Internet
network;
2) a member mesh node that does have local Internet connection and
wishes to share it

Not looking so much on a step-by-step detail, but on what protocols
you use, how you do Internet tunnel announcement/routing, how routing
between mesh members work, etc.

My network is a little different, in that its a ham radio network on
802.11* networks. I'm trying to set it up so that it will be able to
go long distances (with multiple hops), allow intermediate nodes to
pass traffic between destinations on the network, and also provide
gateway opportunities to the Internet provided by nodes with local
Internet connectivity. Seattle Wireless Project, from what I
understand, is already doing this. Also from what I understand,
default firmwares will not do the job; I'm just not sure what you
needed to do to OpenWRT or similar to make it participate in the
network fully.

Thanks!
Jim, K7LL
