It is safe for you to delete any of the files in the cache without causing problems except for losing the files that are deleted. If you don't delete cleanly (you delete a D* file but not the matching U* file) then when you run 'wwwoffle -purge' it will tidy up for you. This robust cache concept is one of the key drivers to the format of the cached directory.
