That fully answers the question that I asked.  But it did not help
because the diagnosis was wrong.  Maybe I was attempting to do the
undoable - importing a WWWOFFLE cache that had been created in RedHat
(with WWWOFFLE-2.8c) and use it in Debian with WWWOFFLE 2.7a.

So, is it <possible|wise> to install WWWOFFLE-2.8c from source on my
Debian box and then use my RedHat cache.

Comparing installed files, the Debian box has entries in:

/var/cache; and 
/var/lib

that do not exist on my RedHat box.  In addition, there are many more
entries in /etc/wwwoffle directory.  These were not removed with a
simple "apt-get remove" (because they were not empty).

Are "deletes" sufficient - or will that simply break something else.
