Finally cracked it.  It seems that although I had all sorts of files
apparently relating to these search engines I did not have the actual
search engines themselves installed !!  I now run Namazu and find it
just right for my needs.  Thanks for trying to help.  I feel a bit
foolish really, but it was perhaps not too stupid a mistake given the
mass of files all clearly to do with these search programs.
