orphaned cache elements

I deleted some pages with large images, and just wondered about the caching.

When i delete a page via the 'delete' link at the bottom, then what will happen to the included images ? I guess they will not be deleted, too (since they could be used by several pages altogether) ?

Hence, will outdated or 'orphaned' images will stay in the cache until occasionally the whole domain gets deleted comepletely ? Can this behaviour be influenced by a specific setting in the 'purge' section ?
