"Zeroconf" is a combination of several things:
   1. link local address allocation
   2. name resolution
   3. service discovery

2 and 3 are supported on linux by the Apple mDNSResponder code:
   http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/rendezvous/

1 can be achieved using zcip and I understand that there
is an in-kernel implementation floating around but I have
not used it.

2 and 3 will also work without 1 (for example if you already
have a DHCP server on your network).
