clicking on them they all looked like links to web pages to me and not
images.  but one requirement for URLs that are images in Wikis is ending
in a known image file extension (like .png or .jpg).

if there's a question mark in a URL and no image file extension you could
probably get away with adding a query string separator (usually "&") and
another query string symbol-value pair (usually separated with "=").
like:

http://www.burn-nature.com/animal/showCarcass.asp?id=17284&file=/i.png
