I agree wholeheartedly with Dave that the military loves to attract the poor. And that's sad and pathetic. However, this kid knew the tenants of his religions and knew what his own personal belief system was before he joined. I can understand an kid with little belief structure going into the army and then figuring out where he stood and being appalled at the thought of fighting and killing. But this guy knew where he stood according to the article before he joined. I don't understand his arguement. He's against violence but joins a system that trains, promotes and faciliates violence. On his thinking, I am tempted to join a gang thinking I won't have to deal drugs or shoot people because I'm just looking for the camraderie and can get out anytime I want. Now if he wanted to get out, there are plenty of ways to leave the military without having to object to fight or get a dishonorable discharge. I knew a guy who got out because he pretended to be claustrophobic and couldn't deal with having a gasmask on for more than an hour. He was off the ship in 48 hours. That's one way.
