A University of Vermont student faces charges in connection with a string
of vandalism-graffiti incidents in Burlington.

Police say they arrested Steven Goldfield, 21, Wednesday on Pearl Street
after they caught him in the act of spray-painting a building.

Police say there is evidence that he Goldfield has been one of
Burlington's busiest graffiti vandals in recent months, responsible for
hundreds of spray-painted tags signed "SENT."

But police say Goldfield's arrest will hardly put a dent in the flood of
graffiti that has been inundating public and private property in
Burlington.

The problem is that as soon as police arrest one tagger, two more appear.

Lisa Cota, Vice President of Vermont Railway, says her company spends
thousands of dollars annually removing graffiti on rail property in
Burlington. But she also worries more about the "taggers" safety.

"The railroad and its property is private property and trespassing is
against the law," said Cota, "but thousands of people do die and are
horribly injured each year by being run over by trains.

Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle was so concerned about graffiti that he
formed a special task force that met for the first time Thursday.

Steven Goldfield has been cited to appear next month in Burlington
District Court on misdemeanor charges of unlawful mischief.
