In response I'd like to provide a few choice quotes from my presentation for my undergraduate CS ethics class: * Privacy and security interests are best protected by documents serving limited purposes and by relying on multiple and decentralized systems of identification. * Centralizing authority over personal identity necessarily increases both the risk of ID theft as well as the scope of harm when ID theft occurs. * People who are easily and constantly tracked by a central authority are not free people. The work I did for this class (with Jon Sullivan, Nick Bonfatti, both heads, and Bridget Zurn) has really shaped my thoughts on digital civil liberties; I come back to the themes of that presentation over and over again. Our notes for that presentation are online, and are damn good IMO: http://www.cs.uvm.edu/~dvanhorn/cs292.2002.sp/security_notes.pdf David _______________________________________________ heads mailing list [email protected] http://ballistichelmet.org/mailman/listinfo/heads/ http://ballistichelmet.org/donate/
