How 'bout them torturers? > > -d > Can I say I'm irritated with NPR? I mean, not just for the week-long tribute to President Reagan's bouyant personality and optimism, but for not asking the hard questions when it counts. A couple months back, listening to Weekend Edition, someone was interviewing Sen. Lieberman (who, among other things, serves on the SASC). Bush wanted, at the time, 25,000 more troops. (what follows is a paraphrase of what was said, of course) Interviewer: President Bush has requested 25,000 more troops to serve in Iraq. Where will these troops come from? Lieberman: Well, we've got 1.2 million troops in the Armed Forces, and 1.4 million in the reserves, so we feel we've got significant numbers to draw from. Doesn't really answer the question, in my mind. Sure, we've got a boatload of troops. We also have bases around the world to staff, persons who are on sick or injured lists, people leaving the military, etc. Where specifically can we draw 25,000, or 50,000 more troops? And then the torture thing. God. There was a guy on talking about how using dogs to intimidate Iraqis was acceptable, a good thing even, because Iraqis are afraid of dogs. No attempt was made to challenge that justification. moving on to the rest of the world, still talking about torture... letters to the editor of that Gannett rag, vets talking about torture being reasonable because terrorists practice the same or worse. Getting sick of hearing the old saw about how 'we can't stoop to that level, because we'd be no better than them.' A. We do stoop to that level, but we lie about it to make ourselves out to be heroes. B. If we didn't think we were better than them, we wouldn't be there. This is just a start, I've got to think about this more. -x -- The helmet's back! God bless the [helmet] administration. _______________________________________________ heads mailing list [email protected] http://ballistichelmet.org/mailman/listinfo/heads/ http://ballistichelmet.org/donate/
