fighting words

When General Pinochet’s agents ransacked Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s bedroom
just days after the dictator seized power in 1973, Neruda responded, “Words
are the only weapons here.” Vermont versifiers also know that the pen is
mightier than the sword when it comes to winning hearts and minds. Nine
outstanding Vermont poets prove the point at a reading for peace. Vermont
State Laureate Grace Paley shares the stage with Greg Delanty, David Budbill,
Galway Kinnell, Jody Gladding, Diane Swan, Major Jackson, David Hinton and
Martha Zweig. John Dunlop, principal cellist of the Vermont Symphony
Orchestra, performs works by J.S. Bach. Photo-grapher Joel Preston Smith’s
recent images from Iraq round out the artistic artillery.

Poets For Peace Wednesday, July 28, City Hall Auditorium, Burlington, 7 p.m.
