The eyes of Latin America, and much of the political world, will soon be
focused on Venezuela, as an August 15 referendum on the presidency of
Hugo Chavez approaches.

Everyone from Nelson Mandela to Jimmy Carter will be in Venezuela for the
big vote, to observe and to advocate for their particular interpretation
of democracy.

It is clear now that the political project Chavez is leading represents a
real threat to the interests of his country's corrupt and decadent ruling
elites, as well as to their patrones in Washington and elsewhere.

And so, as the Venezuelan people's consciousness and mobilization deepens,
the rhetoric of their opponents intensifies and coarsens, as exemplified
by the outrageous comments of two-time Venezuelan president Carlos Andres
Perez. From his home in Miami, the decrepit opposition supporter stated
that Chavez "must die like a dog, because he deserves it," adding for
clarity, "I am working to remove Chavez. Violence will allow us to remove
him. That's the only way we have."

From our very first issue, Seven Oaks has covered the unfolding proceso
in that oil-rich South American country. And, today, more than ever, we
feel it’s important to keep a close eye on the Bolivarian Revolution,
and to gain a perspective not on offer in the corporate media, which,
both in Venezuela and internationally, is growing more shrill in its
calls for Chavez's ouster. So, to that end, we've assembled below some
of our coverage from the archives, as well as indicated a number of
links to the best sites available for up-to-date news and analysis from
Caracas.

When the April, 2002 coup briefly toppled Chavez, it was largely still
off the world's political radar. Right now, Venezuela needs our
attention and our solidarity. It deserves it, lest the violent and
despicable dreams of the likes of Carlos Andres Perez become reality.
