C-SPAN To Air Sanders' Press Conference This Weekend


WHEN: On Saturday, October 2 at 12:00 pm and Sunday, October 3 at 8:30 am on
CSPAN 2.

WHAT: In this press conference held in the U.S. Capitol, several organizations
delivered petitions gathered through the jointly-sponsored Campaign for Reader
Privacy to Representative Sanders. Speaking at the press conference were Rep.
Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Pat Schroeder, President of the Association of American
Publishers, Salman Rushdie, President of the PEN American Center, Oren Teicher,
CEO of the  American Booksellers Association, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Carla
Hayden, Former President of the American Library Association. The over 180,000
signatures were gathered in libraries and independent bookstores across the
country in opposition to section 215 of the Patriot Act.

Congressman Bernie Sanders has been a leader in Congress in protecting the civil
liberties of all Americans. Rep. Sanders is the author of the Freedom to Read
Protection Act. His legislation was the first piece of legislation introduced in
the House of Representatives to amend the Patriot Act. The legislation has the
support of over 150 bipartisan Members of Congress, 20 newspapers nationwide,
and over 50 national book, library, publishing, civil liberty, religious, and
privacy organizations. The legislation would reinstate legal standards for
investigations which were in place for libraries and bookstores before the
passage of the USA Patriot Act.
