-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Legal Observer Request Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2004 01:18:25 -0400 From: RNC Mass Defense <[email protected]> To: dvanhorn-UYko1UTVIqz2fBVCVOL8/[email protected] RALLY AND PRESS CONFERENCE Wednesday, October 13th at 11am Flushing/College Point DMV office 30-56 Whitestone Expressway and Linden Place If you can help, contact: Blanca Ramirez, NYCPP Organizing Dir (212) 388-2150 or Cell (917) 531-8917 Zahida Pirani, NYCPP Queens Organizer (212) 3883210 or Cell (917)370- 4905 ALSO EMAIL [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> The New York Civic Particpation Project (NYCPP) brings together labor, workers and communities to fight for immigrant and labor rights. Our Queens committee has been working with a group of about 45 workers and taxi drivers who call themselves Inmigrants por el Derecho a Conducir." They are concerned about the new regulations and possible suspension of driver's licenses of anyone who can not provide a valid social security number. Many of them are in danger of having their license suspended, which would affect their driving legally for work and other needs. The group decided they want to carry out a demonstration and press conference in front of the DMV offices in Queens. The demonstration will take place Wednesday, October 13th at 11am at the Flushing/College Point DMV office at 30-56 Whitestone Expressway and Linden Place. At approximately 11:30am, the group will make a statement to the press and give testimonies. They will be demanding "One License for All" and a moratorium on the suspendsion of licenses due to happen in November. They will also be denouncing Fernando Mateo's proposal of the IDP, Immigrant Drivers Permit, as discriminatory and that Mateo does not speak for all of the Taxi/Livery driving community or Latinos. The group is planning to stay at least two and a half hours or as long as the press hangs around. A number of other groups will be joining them to support the issue including the NYCPP, the Coalition for Immigrants Rights to Drivers Licenses, 32BJ union members, the Taxiworkers Alliance and others. We expect anywhere from 50 to 100 people. We believe this event will be well covered by the Spanish speaking media. Although we know we should not block the sidewalk and let people pass, we have concerns about doing the right things to keep our people safe and run a successful event. It would be great to have legal observers with us (lawyers and law students welcome!) This would give a lot of reassurance to our group. We appreciate all the assistance you can provide us. Please fell free to contact me or Zahida Pirani if you need additional information. Thank you, Blanca Ramirez, NYCPP Organizing Dir (212) 388-2150 or Cell (917) 531-8917 Zahida Pirani, NYCPP Queens Organizer (212) 3883210 or Cell (917) 370- 4905 _______________________________________________ heads mailing list [email protected] http://your.ballistichelmet.org/mailman/listinfo/heads/ http://ballistichelmet.org/donate/
