Unfortunately, the publishers and authors of Swan's are incorrect in thinking they know how to control that use so as to maximize its effect. That's why a Free license that provides a world-wide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual, sublicenseable license to do the following is a Good Thing: a) to reproduce the Original Work in copies b) to prepare derivative works based upon the Original Work c) to distribute copies of the Original and Derivative Works to the public d) to perform the Original Work publicly e) to display the Original Work publicly The Academic Free license does precisely this, for example. http://opensource.org/licenses/afl-2.0.php > From: Gilles d'Aymery <[email protected]> > Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 18:11:14 -0800 > Subject: Re: [ballistichelmet] Press Action Hero of the Week > My use of copyright laws has nothing to do with patenting *ideas* or > *works.* It has to do with people taking advantage of someone's > else work for the benefit of their own endeavor -- without even > crediting the originator. > People should not, and are not "free" to appropriate [ideas]. This remark and its repetition throughout the response is telling of d'Aymery's ignorance of the Free Software movement and a misreading of my comments. Nowhere did I say people should be free to appropriate work as originally theirs and without attribution. Many copyleft licenses include attribution clauses, eg. the Academic Free License above. There's also the Creative Commons attribution license. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/1.0/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/1.0/legalcode David _______________________________________________ heads mailing list [email protected] http://ballistichelmet.org/mailman/listinfo/heads/ http://ballistichelmet.org/donate/
