Type Systems for Information Flow Security
David Van Horn, University of Vermont

Abstract:

Information flow analysis is concerned with the propagation of information
throughout computation, ensuring properties of secrecy and integrity.
Secrecy is established by showing that a program's behavior reveals no
information about secret inputs, integrity is established by showing a
program's behavior remains independent of unreliable inputs.  Both
properties are instances of "non-interference": certain dependencies are
invariantly absent.

We examine secure information flow analysis formulated as a type system
such that well typed programs exhibit non-interference.  A typed-based
approach benefits from the use of existing type inference results for
automation and type signatures provide concise, formal security specifications.
