Yes, I heard talk of cytoculture for oil production while up at a  
Cold Weather Biofuel workshop in Seattle. Some of the bio folks up  
there are working on a grant to build such an algae colony  
contraption. Sounds weird but cool and if the claims are true, the  
oil yield from algae would be much higher than food crop yields.

There was also talk of a company in Japan working on an alternative  
catalyst to lye, based on sugar molecules.
