Maria 'Mark' Alovert, a California biodiesel homebrew advocate and the
inventor of the Appleseed biodiesel processor used by the largest number
of backyard biodiesel producers, is teaching a biodiesel production
class at North Seattle Community College on March 17-18. Some students
in the class will also be building equipment to take home- it is
currently too late to get parts for new students, but you may all help
build the processors and will learn how to do it at home.

The course primarily focuses on quality control, safety, and the
chemistry of biodiesel- if you did not purchase a reactor kit previously
for the build, you can still participate fully.

The class is very hands-on, and will include the following topics and more:

-biodiesel/SVO/solvent thinning options and history,
-real-world biodiesel quality case studies,
-biodiesel chemistry,
-testing oil (titration and water testing),
-making test batches,
-an overview of equipment,
-a chance to build your own reactor at the end of Sunday's class,
-quality control factors,
-two-stage base biodiesel,
-quality testing,
-mistwashing and other water washing options,
-breaking emulsions formed in washing,
-waste water and glycerine disposal and reuse,
-common pitfalls,
-hands-on experience recovering from failed batches and
emulsion,
-safety,
... and more

We'll be making 1-liter test batches, and will focus strongly on quality
control and safety.
