It is more formally known as Magnasol in the homebrew circle. It does
a fine job of cleaning biodiesel up and should be easy to filter.

However I've been told that it requires significant agitation and in
the process; most pumps will pulverize the beads into dust. So you
need very fine filtration to fully remove the product. I've never used
it so I can't say for sure.

Ion exchange resins utilize an exchange of ions between two
electrolytes or between an electrolyte solution and a complex.
Biodiesel ion-exchange resins specifically need to attract positively
charged cations.

Some resins have a binding preferences for certain ions depending on
their chemical structure.

The products I have encountered are dried cation resins that
effectively capture trace salts, soaps, glycerin and other organics
from a freshly separated crude biodiesel stream.

Each manufacturer's resin seem to have different features.

The Dowex DR-G8 product wants a demethylated biodiesel stream with
trace impurities in the 250-750 ppm range. The resin has the ability
to absorb trace amounts of water. The resin is stated to expand up to
8%

The Rohm & Haas Amberlite BD-10 product wants a methylated biodiesel
stream with trace impurities in the 400-700 ppm range operates. 1 lb
of resin can treat 900-1600 lbs of biodiesel. Resin can be regenerated
to remove glycerol. The product expands by as much as 300%.

The Purolite PD206 product operates with either a methylated or
demethylated biodiesel stream with trace impurities < 500 ppm. 1 lb of
resin can treat 2000 lbs of biodiesel. Resin can be regenerated to
remove glycerol. The product expands by as much as 150%.

If anyone else knows additional pros / cons of the different ion
exchange resins out there for biodiesel. Please don't hesitate to post
your information.
