Aluminum and methoxide do not mix--or rather they do and that is the problem. You'll need to stick with steel for the processor. And while I haven't seen it, I have heard horror storries of heating elements burning through the plastic and all going to hell. I use plastic for my methoxide mixer and my wash tank but I would never use it for my processor. Too much heat for me to feel comfortable there. Here, here on the hot water heater!! Cheap and easy with the downfall of it not being cone-bottomed, a minor inconvenience. Brian S PS I still have lots of biodiesel for sale for anyone interested. Drop me a line or give me a call at 503-781-1117. I am selling it for $3 a gallon. ----- Original Message ---- From: George Reiswig <[email protected]> To: General Biodiesel discussion <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 7:23:29 AM Subject: RE: [pdx-biodiesel] making a processor Plastic plus hot oil plus electricity seems a recipe for a mess or a fire, although many people seem to use this method. All I can say is I'd watch it like a hawk every minute it was on. Aluminum and methoxide do will react chemically, and not in a good way. Put some foil in some methoxide and you'll see what I mean. Stainless works great, but so do water heaters. I am thinking about using a plastic tank that has a cone shap bottom as the processor. I have also considered using a aluminum tank for the processor, plastic to mix the methanol with KOH. I hear that stainles steal is best but that seems expensive to me. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
