IDPA New Shooter Orientation Clinic

LASC has a number of members who have expressed interest in participating in
the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) monthly match but have
not done so because of a wide variety of reasons. The most common reason
expressed to me is a lack of knowledge of IDPA rules and requirements and
being unsure of the skill set necessary to participate safely. The IDPA
Headquarters recommends that a basic safety program be conducted for new
competitors who have not competed in any action shooting, practical shooting
or other shooting discipline that require drawing a firearm from a holster
and movement. This class would include the following areas:
* Loading and unloading the firearm
* Drawing from holster and re-holstering
* Gripping the firearm with strong hand, weak hand, and free style
* Sight alignment
* Trigger control
* Reloading (slide lock, tactical reload, reload with retention)
* Moving with a drawn firearm
* Shooting stances to include prone, kneeling and barricade shooting
* Clearing malfunctions
* How matches are scored
* Range commands and procedures
* IDPA rules
The bottom line is that this basic safety program would provide new
competitors with the knowledge; skills and attitude to safety participate in
IDPA. In my opinion participation in IDPA is an excellent way to develop
and maintain highly perishable shooting skills.
I would like to offer the IDPA New Shooter Orientation/Basic Safety Program
once a quarter this year. This would be an 8-hour orientation that would
cost $25. All proceeds from this training would go back to LASC and will be
used to support the IDPA program. I have tentatively scheduled the first
orientation for March 15, 2008.
I would like to get some feedback from LASC members on this as well as
anyone who would like to sign up. What do you think?
