I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the LASC email communication group for about two years. Reading the emails keeps me informed as to the club's activities and brings to mind some of the best times I have ever spent outdoors -- backpacking trips with our Boy Scouts up at Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimmaron. We also have visited the Whittington Center at Raton. I'm not sure if a non-resident who doesn't really visit the club can join LASC, but if one can, I would gladly do so. I commend you on what is obviously a well-run operation and a great club. I do look forward to visiting.
The reason that I'm on the email list is because of a NRA Board of Directors election in which I was a candidate a couple of years ago. I communicated with some of your officers at that time and was added to the list. Well, while I missed the 48,000 vote cut-off by only about 1400 votes that time, I've now been nominated again and I would certainly appreciate the consideration of the members of LASC.
The ballot is in the March edition of the "American Rifleman", "American Hunter" or "America's First Freedom" received a few days ago by "voting members" (those who are Life Members or who are Annual Members with at least 5 consecutive years of membership). Although a member can vote for up to 26 candidates, since this is a plurality election in which the 26 individuals receiving the most votes will be elected, limiting the number of candidates you vote for to just a few will increase the chance that your selections will finish in the top 26. Ballots must be received by April 27, 2008.
Just below this note you will see a biographical sketch similar to that included with your ballot in the magazine.
Thank you for your consideration. I would be very grateful for your vote. Please feel free to contact me if I can provide any additional information or if I can ever be of service to any of you or to LASC.
Sincerely,
Curtis Jenkins
Forsyth, GA
Curtis Jenkins, a former Georgia legislator who is a NRA Certified Firearms Instructor and NRA Referral Attorney, is a candidate for the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association. Former U.S. Senator Zell Miller, with whom Rep. Jenkins served for ten years while Miller was Georgias lieutenant governor and governor, is an incumbent member of the NRA Board, but is not seeking reelection. During his 16 years of service as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Rep. Jenkins was consistently rated A+ by the NRA and was recognized as the legislatures strongest Second Amendment advocate.
In 1999, Rep. Jenkins authored/sponsored the nations first law prohibiting frivolous lawsuits by municipalities against firearm manufacturers, since adopted in 33 states and by Congress, signed into law by President Bush in 2005. In 2000, he received a special NRA national legislative leadership award. Currently a Benefactor Member, he is a 39-year NRA member, having joined as a Junior member when he was 14. He earned degrees at Georgia Tech (Management) and Mercer University (Law).
Rep. Jenkins served as Chairman of the Special Judiciary Committee and as Vice Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, positions in which he was an unwavering fighter for gun owners.
Curtis is a Boy Scout leader who has helped facilitate shooter training for Scouts. He is a shooter, collector, hunter and fisherman. He is a former Auxiliary Deputy (Monroe County, GA) and an Honorary Life Member of the Georgia Sheriffs Association. He formerly served as a District Director of the Georgia Wildlife Federation and as a member of the Legislative Sportsmans Caucus. As President of the Monroe County Sportsmans Federation he has organized competitive shooting and NSSF Hunting & Fishing Day events. Besides serving as a NRA Referral Attorney, he is a referral attorney for the Police Benevolent Association. In addition, Curtis is a member of Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Georgia Wildlife Federation, and several NRA state affiliates across t
he nation including those in Georgia (GSSA), Texas (TSRA), California (CRPA), New York (NYSRPA), Illinois (ISRA), Indiana (ISRPA), Ohio (ORPA) and Kentucky (LKS).
(All NRA Life Members and Annual Members with at least 5 consecutive years of membership should have received a ballot in their March, 2008 American Rifleman or other NRA magazine which was delivered around February 20th. Because this is a plurality election in which the 26 individuals receiving the most votes will be elected, limiting the number of candidates you vote for to just a few increases the chance that your selections will finish in the top 26. Ballots must be received by April 27, 2008.)
