Hello, members...

I asked two questions of the NM DPS SID Bureau regarding
clarification of the new law.

1) Are current licensees going to be "grandfathered" into the new 4-
year expiration and "largest caliber" provisions?

and 2) Does the "largest caliber" provision cut across firearm
categories? In other words, if a .45 semi-auto is on my license, can
I carry a .38 special revolver?

DPS' answers:

"...No on 'grandfathering' anyone in. A two year license is a two
year license. Also applications received before 06/17/2005 will be
for two years and applications received after 06/17/2005 will be for
four years."

"...On largest caliber question, if someone qualifies with a .45 semi
auto handgun, they may carry any semi auto .45 and under. If someone
qualifies with a .45 revolver, they may carry any revolver .45 and
under. They may not cut across firearm categories."

Members who have signed up for my class that graduates May 1st will
have 90 days (until July 29th) to have their applications on DPS'
desk. I recommend that those members submit their applications after
June 17th (and before July 29th) since they will be covered under the
new law.

This means that if you were planning on bringing multiple caliber
firearms within the same category to the class, you no longer need
to. Just bring the largest caliber of each category with which to
qualify.

Feel free to write me at [email protected] or call me at 505 660 1868
if you have any other questions.

Thanks, and be safe!
