Hello, members... NM DPS has asked me to ensure correct information is passed on regarding licenses that are expiring soon and the renewal process. Contrary to some indications otherwise, CCW holders do not have to send their current license to DPS with their renewal package. The renewal package consists of: 1) The renewal application (NOTE: available online at http://www.dps.nm.org/faq/concealed_weapon.htm) 2) Two full sets of fingerprints as required by NMSA 1978 Section 29- 19-5 and 10.8.2.14 NMAC; 3) a certified copy of a certificate of completion for a refresher firearms training course approved by the department issued by an approved instructor not more than 90 days prior to the date the application is filed; and 4) a nonrefundable $75.00 renewal fee Please - don't ask me why they need two more sets of fingerprints. I know - it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You had to submit fingerprint cards with your original applications two years ago and I seriously doubt that your fingerprints have changed since then, but that's what the law says. Just to recap -- you must file your renewal application not more than 60 days *before* the expiration date, and not more than 60 days *after* the expiration date. You can take the refresher class up to 90 days before the day you submit your renewal application. Be safe!
