Hello, members...

I'd like to address John's recent post regarding transporting
firearms on West Jemez Road and the possible limitations associated
with the Security Perimeter Project.

In my position at LANL, I am intimately involved in the development
of proposed policy regarding transportation of firearms using Jemez
Road. While I must be cautious regarding making statements that may
be interpreted as official LANL policy in this venue, I can state
that at this point, there is no intention -- or recommendation going
forward -- to impose restrictions affecting the transportation of
firearms in vehicles on Jemez Road at the current Security Condition
(SECON) level.

At higher SECON levels, there may be such restrictions put into placeĀ…
and, it's my firm belief they would be needed and necessary to ensure
the protection of LANL assets and personnel. It's been our experience
since the events of 9/11 that higher SECON levels are usually short-
lived, and if additional restrictions were imposed, they would be of
minimal impact to those of us who carry firearms in our vehicles.

I must stress, however, that while there is no current or intended
transportation restriction for Jemez Road at this SECON level, those
transporting firearms in their vehicles must not turn off onto any
other road on LANL property or into any LANL parking lot where
official "No Trespassing" signs are posted. If you do so, you are
subject to being charged with trespassing if your firearm is
discovered in your vehicle during routine security operations.

If you would like to talk to me more about this issue, feel free to
contact me at 665-7907 in the office, or 660-1868 at home. I'll be
happy to discuss it as much as I can without getting into "official
policy" space before it is published.
