Learning good software design

Hi,

I've recently taken an interest in well modularized software such as
djbdns, qmail, ucspi-tcp, and so on.  Along with similar software linked
from http://thedjbway.org/friends.html, these provide great examples of
how software should be designed and implemented.  However, learning by
example has its limits.

Can anyone recommend resources for learning good software design?  In
particular, high performance, secure, UNIX software?
