attibutes of lockfile created by setlock

Dear List,

I'm using setlock to serialize access to a directory;
The problem is that 2+ different users will be sharing this lockfile and
setlock creates it with attributes (-rw------- user user) that prevents
other users from locking it even after the first user has unlocked;

I'm running debian and I'd like to place the lockfile in /var/lock so
creating the file beforehand will not work...

How do you guys get around this?
I'd like to hear your comments!
