I believe that the message of mine to which you refer is the one I
sent on Tuesday,
October 15, 2024, at 2:33 AM. That's in my time zone. The message will
probably show up on your computer as having been sent on the same date at a
later hour in your time zone.

Your message suggests that the work on the subtitles is ongoing at this
time. If so, I can -- and would be happy to -- suggest additional
improvements to the work in progress. Of course, I would not let this
interfere with my regular proofreading of English text for the FSFE: news
items, newsletters, researchers' papers, and anything else that I am asked
to do.

Here is a description of what I have in mind:

The subtitles file has three data for each item, conveniently on
separate lines: subtitle number, time information, and text.

I can watch the movie, and -- if I wish -- not only hear the English
narration but also see the English subtitles and see time information.
What I see and hear is quite different from the subtitles file Ana
sent. To pick some prominent examples, there is nothing that
corresponds to the junk of 640-650. And instead of

658
00:30:30,220 --> 00:30:31,220
 Ada's boarded up

I see a subtitle "and he has boarded up". And the time even matches:
when I stopped the movie to write down the subtitle, what is displayed
is 30:30. (I have no idea what the "220"s mean,)

That's not to say that there isn't still proofreading to be done. The
subtitle just before this is "anymore." That ends a sentence, so "and
he" should be "And he."

it may be possible to get an accurate subtitle list from the folks who
prepared the actual subtitles.

If not, I could use the subtitle file Ana sent and manually correct
its subtitles as necessary to conform to the movie. If necessary, I
would put in corrected times for the entries where I changed the
texts. This would probably suffice, even if some of the other times
might be slightly wrong. (In the file, there are times listed for
subtitles 640-640 that do not appear in the movie. Also,
the subtitles that are displayed behave a little strangely around
there. They do not line up with the narration. The subtitle "And
Zangemann?" [correctly spelled, unlike 637] is displayed while the
image being displayed still shows the party and the spoken narration
is still describing the party. Only after that is the cute dog
displayed.)

I could probably do the entire movie with less effort than I expended
proofreading the subtitles file that Ana sent out. It would certainly
be more pleasant work, even if it took longer. (I could no longer
simply read the subtitles file while listening to the soundtrack.
I would have to compare the on-screen subtitles to the file.)
